Cover: Does Despendo work offline? What works and what doesn't

What you can see in Despendo when there is no connection, what needs the internet and how to get ready before a blackout or storm.

The short answer is: partly. Despendo keeps your information in the cloud so you can share it with your family group and receive alerts. But if you have already opened the app with a connection, your device keeps a copy and you can open and check it when the internet goes down. What you can't do without a network is change anything.

What does work

Offline, the app opens and shows you the latest copy of your information:

  • Your pantry, with quantities and expiration dates
  • Your family, your garden and the 72-hour kit checklist
  • Your settings and your most recent activity

A notice shows the date of that copy, so you know how current it is. It is what you need in a long blackout: see what you have and what expires first, even if you can't change anything.

What doesn't work

  • Adding, editing or using up items. The copy is read-only. When the connection returns, you log it.
  • Weather, AI recipes and barcode lookup, which call outside services.
  • Pages other than the app's main screen, such as Profile.

What has to happen first

The copy doesn't appear by itself. It comes with these conditions:

  1. You opened the app online at least once on that device while signed in.
  2. It refreshes every time you open the app with a connection, and the app uses it for about 30 days.
  3. If you sign out, that copy is deleted from your device.

That last point matters if you use a shared or borrowed phone: sign out when you finish. The health details in your family profile stay in the copy while the session is open.

How to get ready

  • Open the app online before the storm, or when a possible outage is announced. That is what refreshes the copy.
  • Add it to your phone's home screen so it is one tap away.
  • Print what can't fail: the emergency plan can be exported to keep on paper, and it is worth having the kit checklist printed too.
  • Mind the battery. A local copy is of little use on a dead phone; see which one suits you: power bank, portable power station or generator.

If you need to edit offline

If your priority is adding and changing items during a long blackout, other apps keep everything on the phone and work without internet, at the cost of things like sharing with your family or alerts. We compare them calmly in Despendo vs other pantry apps. For everyday life, the cloud is usually an advantage; for the day when nothing works, having the plan on paper is the best safety net.
